What You Call Home, Others Call Hell

Image
For many, home is a safe haven. It is the place one can use as refuge when the world outside becomes insufferable. However, for others, home is anything but a sanctuary. Domestic abuse or domestic violence (DV) is a human rights violation and is often considered a global public health crisis . Understanding its definition can help victims realize that what they are experiencing is indeed domestic abuse. In addition, it can help outsiders take a more effective action against it. Since domestic abuse against women has been “an age-old phenomenon” as quoted by Kaur and Garg in their article “Addressing Domestic Violence Against Women: An Unfinished Agenda”, there has been a number of modifications to its definition. The United Nations (UN) defines domestic abuse as “a pattern of behavior in any relationship that is used to gain or maintain power and control over an intimate partner.” Domestic abuse is not restricted to phys...

Why IKEA's Campaign During COVID-19 Successfully Resonated with Everyone

Image
March 2020 was the start of it all. What everyone thought was only going to be a two-week thing ended up being our new reality. Two weeks at home away from school, university, or work, what could go wrong? It was the dream at the time. Everyone started planning everything they wished to do during what we wanted to believe was a holiday, but no one would have thought it would last for over a year and challenge every single aspect of our daily lives. Two weeks turned into 4 weeks which turned into months and that went on till we found ourselves welcoming the new year stuck at home.        IKEA Singapore collaborated with the creative agency TBWA/Singapore and crafted the ‘Making Home Count’ video campaign to make life at home not seem like such a waste. The world outside was risky, so we had to make life bearable and exciting inside the safety of our homes. As well-said by Nigel Ric...

Innocent Celebrity Crush Turns into Fatal Obsession ( A Deep Dive into Celebrity Worship Syndrome)

Image
There is nothing wrong in admiring and looking up to celebrities, yet when looking deep into this admiration, it is often seen as abnormal and strange that people absolutely love and care for these public figures that do not know of their existence. Moreover, the fans know nothing about their personal daily lives and are not involved in it. As Nathan Heflick says, “We love celebrities because they are an integral part of culture. They have made it in the worldview we are so entrenched in. By worshipping them (to an extent), we feel as if we are participating in this hugely important cause/belief system.” Indeed, because celebrities are always in the public eye, they are expected to be admired and idolized by the young and the adults, but sometimes this admiration turns into something extreme and harmful for both the admirer and the admired.       “Celebrity worship syndrome has been described as an obsessive-addictive disorder ...

When Life is Forced to a Halt

Image
Most of us who commute everyday spend a good amount of time on the subway, and we will probably agree that it is not a pleasant place to be. It becomes an endless cycle. L ife can often feel like a wave of d éjà vu,  and your days turn dull and grey. You can already feel that tomorrow is the same as today and yesterday. However, that cycle is broken when something out of the ordinary happens whether it is something great or awful. One way or another, this event burns a hole in your memory and changes the way you go about your future commutes.  This is exactly what happened to me on a random commute to my university campus. It was the commute where I experienced the feeling of my heart sinking to my stomach in its strongest sense. keep in mind that some subway lines in Egypt unfortunately tend to be dangerous if you're not being careful. It was a mundane morning on the subway. I was sitting in my usual seat absorbed in my new...
